NOMENCLATURE
Common name imidacloprid (BSI, draft E-ISO); imidaclopride ((m) F-ISO)
IUPAC name 1-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-N-nitroimidazolidin-2-ylideneamine
Chemical Abstracts name 1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridinyl)methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine CAS RN [138261-41-3]

APPLICATIONS
Mode of action Systemic insecticide with translaminar activity and with contact and stomach action. Readily taken up by the plant and further distributed acropetally, with good root-systemic action.

Uses Control of sucking insects, including rice-, leaf- and planthoppers, aphids, thrips and whitefly. Also effective against soil insects, termites and some species of biting insects, such as rice water weevil and Colorado beetle. Has no effect on nematodes and spider mites. Used as a seed dressing, as soil treatment and as foliar treatment in different crops, e.g. rice, cotton, cereals, maize, sugar beet, potatoes, vegetables, citrus fruit, pome fruit and stone fruit. Applied at 25-100 g/ha for foliar application, and 50-175 g/100 kg seed for most seed treatments, and 350-700 g/100 kg cotton seed. Also used to controls fleas in dogs and cats.

APPLICATIONS
Mode of action Acts as a plant growth regulator on account of its physiological and morphological effects in extremely low concentrations. Translocated. Generally affects only the plant parts above the soil surface.
Uses Has a variety of applications, e.g. to improve fruit setting of clementines and pears (especially William pears); to loosen and elongate clusters and increase berry size in grapes; to control fruit maturity by delaying development of the yellow colour in lemons; to reduce rind stain and retard rind ageing in navel oranges; to counteract the effects of cherry yellows virus diseases in sour cherries; to produce uniform seedling growth in rice; to promote elongation of winter celery crop; to induce uniform bolting and increase seed production in lettuce for seed; to break dormancy and stimulate sprouting in seed potatoes; to extend the picking season by hastening maturity in artichokes; to increase the yield in forced rhubarb; to increase the malting quality of barley; to produce brighter-coloured, firmer fruit, and to increase the size of sweet cherries; to increase yields and aid harvesting of hops; to reduce internal browning and increase yields of Italian prunes; to increase fruit set and yields of tangelos and tangerines; to improve fruit setting in blueberries; to advance flowering and increase the yield of strawberries; and also a variety of applications on ornamentals. Application rates up to 80 g/a per application, depending on desired effect.
Compatibility Incompatible with alkaline materials and solutions containing chlorine.

CAS RN [52918-63-5]; [52820-00-5] ((RS)- (1R)-cis- isomer pair)
APPLICATIONS
Mode of action Non-systemic insecticide with contact and stomach action. Fast-acting.
Uses A potent insecticide, effective by contact and ingestion against a wide range of pests. Crop protection uses include: Coleoptera (2.5-7.5 g/ha), Heteroptera (5.0-7.5 g/ha), Homoptera (6.2-12.5 g/ha), Lepidoptera (5.0-21 g/ha) and Thysanoptera (5-10 g/ha) in cereals, citrus, cotton, grapes, maize, oilseed rape, soya beans, top fruit and vegetables. It controls Acrididae (5.0-12.5 g/ha), and is recommended against locusts. Soil surface sprays (2.5-5.0 g/ha) control Noctuidae. It is used against indoor crawling and flying insects (12.5 mg/m2) and pests of stored grain (0.25-0.5 g/t) and timber (Blattodea, Culicidae, Muscidae). Dip or spray (12.5-75 mg/l), and pour-on (0.75 mg/kg b.w.) applications give good control of Muscidae, Tabanidae, Ixodidae and other Acari on cattle, sheep and pigs, etc.

APPLICATIONS
Biochemistry Branched chain amino acid synthesis (ALS or AHAS) inhibitor. Acts by inhibiting biosynthesis of the essential amino acids valine and isoleucine, hence stopping cell division and plant growth. Selectivity is due to rapid metabolism in the crop. Metabolic basis of selectivity reviewed (M. K. Koeppe & H. M. Brown, Agro-Food-Industry, 6, 9-14 (1995)).
Mode of action Selective systemic herbicide, absorbed by the foliage and roots, with rapid translocation to the meristematic tissues.
Uses Selective pre- and post-emergence control of annual and perennial weeds and sedges (e.g. Butomus umbellatus, Scirpus maritimus, Scirpus mucronatus, Alisma plantago-aquatica, Sparganium erectum, Cyperus spp., Typha spp., etc.) in continuously flooded rice, at 30-100 g/ha.

Biochemistry Branched chain amino acid synthesis (ALS or AHAS) inhibitor. Acts by inhibiting biosynthesis of the essential amino acids valine and isoleucine, hence stopping cell division and plant growth. Selectivity derives from rapid metabolism in the crop. Metabolic basis of selectivity in sulfonylureas reviewed (M. K. Koeppe & H. M. Brown, Agro-Food-Industry, 6, 9-14 (1995)).
Mode of action Selective systemic herbicide absorbed through the roots and foliage, with rapid translocation both acropetally and basipetally. Susceptible plants cease growth almost immediately after post-emergence treatment, and are killed in 7-21 days. Surfactants increase the activity of metsulfuron-methyl on certain broad-leaved weeds.
Uses Metsulfuron-methyl controls a wide range of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds in wheat, barley, rice and oats, by either pre- or post-emergence application, at 4-7.5 g/ha post-emergence.

Biochemistry Acts as an antagonist by binding to postsynaptic nicotinic receptors in the insect central nervous system.
Mode of action Systemic insecticide with translaminar activity and with contact and stomach action. Readily taken up by the plant and further distributed acropetally, with good root-systemic action.
Uses
Control of sucking insects, including rice-, leaf- and planthoppers, aphids, thrips and whitefly.
